Christmas Day Accident with Entrapment

A few minutes after 11pm the ambulance crew was returning to the firehouse after transporting a patient from an early accident on cypress st. The crew was backing into the station when they heard the sound of a loud bang. They looked north on church lane and saw blinking tail light where they should not be, on the sidewalk in from of Nicks deli. They proceeded to the area and found a vehicle that crashed into the tree in front of nicks. They immediately radio the 911 center to dispatch the rest of company 16 for an accident with heavy entrapment and multiple injuries inside the jeep. Chief Jeffries (16-9) arrived , assumed command and requested multiple ambulances and Rescue Co 19 (Lansdowne) to assist with extrication. Due to the severity of the impact, the extrication was a prolonged and mapped out combination for both rescue companies and medical personnel. All of the patients were transported to the Hospital of the University Trauma center because of their injuries.
Due to the condition of the vehicle the last patients was extricated and transported to the hospital 1 hr and 7 minutes after the initial dispatch.
Units on scene, Rescue 16, Tac 16, 16-7 & 16-7A, Rescue 19, Eng 19, Medic Co 105, Amb 24 & Medic 04-7A and all surrounding police departments.

Early morning accident with Entrapment

Around 7:45am Thursday December 22, 2005 The Yeadon Fire Company was dispatched to the area of Penn st & Church Lane for a MVA with entrapment. After the first dispatches, the calls that were being recieved by the 911 center, was making the dispatcher wonder if it was really a accident with entrapment. Yeadon Police arrived on the church lane ave bridge and found a vehicle suspended in the air. The car traveling south on the church lane bridge was elevated on the wall with the driver still inside. After the fire companies arrived and stablized the vehicle the driver was then able to remove himself through the drivers side door. There was no injuries and the car was then removed from the bridge by sieple towing. The road was cleared of any debris and the roadway was opened up for traffic once again
Units on scene were Yeadon Fire Company's Rescue, Ambulance, Tac-16, Lansdowne fire company rescue and ambulance, Medic company 105 QRS 105 & Yeadon Police.

November 28 Working House Fire with Entrapment

Around 1000 pm a call was recieved by the 911 center for smoke in the area of union and providence rd. Several seconds later the dispatch went out for a possible building fire in the area. The police responded and found heavy smoke in the area but could not immediately find the cause for the heavy smoke. After checking the area quickly it was determined to be a house on providnece road with heavy smoke and fire showing from the attic and roof of the property. The ambulance crew and police then noticed that there were several people still in the property. Chief Tom Young 19-9 arrived also and reported a working fire with people trapped. The police and medics tried to enter the front door which was locked, they then force entry into the property and removed the 2 people from the residence. Chief Jeffries arrived on scene and took command and ordered all hands in service. After the first in crew checked the property for any other tenants while other crews were attacking the fire. The fire was advancing through the entire attic area and through the rest of the roof. 16-9 Jeffries noticed that the front of the attic was in about to collapse, he ordered all fire fighters out of the property. He then went into defensive attack and after getting some control of the fire he order crews back in to the property to extinguish the rest of the fire. He struck out the 2nd alarm for manpower because of the amount of fire and condition of the property. The fire was a stubborn fire and it took about 5 hours to contol it.

The fire is still under investigation by the fire marshal office.

NOVEMBER 2005

November 20 Accident
Company 16 was dispatched to the 900 block of Rundale ave, for a 2 vehicle accident. Ambulance 16 arrived to find 1 pt that was hurt. 16-9 Chief Jeffries requested the rescue enter from the Mcdade blvd direction and set up lights and assist 16-7 with pt care and clean up. After assisting the ambulance crew the pt was transported to Hup for treatment. The company waited for the tow truck to arrive and remove the vehicles from blocking the roadway. The company went available within 45 mins.

November 17, 2005
At 500 pm the fire company was dispatched to the 900 block of bullock ave for a rubbish fire. After arriving on scene Yeadon Car 1A advised fire board that it was a lawn orniment that was set on fire and it was already extinguished by the neighbors. Chief Jeffries 16-9 recalled the assignment.

November 14, 2005

Around 10 am companies were dispatched to the area of Fern & Longacre blvd for smoke coming from a dwelling. Upon arrival of Yeadon Car 1A, he found smoke coming from the 1st floor of a vacant property. He advised the incoming companies that they would have to force entry to the property. After entry was gained, the building was checked for any one inside. They found a rubbish fire on the first floor of the property. It was extinguished by a pressurized water extinguisher. The property was also ventilated by PPV fans. This fire is under investigation by the fire marshals office and the Yeadon Police Department. All companies went available and the property was boarded up by mellon restoration company

Later that night
Company 16 was dispatched to Ridgeway Court Apartments for a reported apartment fire. Chief Tom Young 19-9 arrived to find nothing showing from the lansdowne ave side. After checking the parking lot side of the building he found heavy smoke pushing from a first floor apartment with a young boy hanging out of the window. The young boy stated that his mother was still in the apartment. Chief Young relayed that message to incoming units and they all prepared to go into service for a rescue. 16-1 crew arrived and entered the building to find no other tenants in that apartment and all of the floors were already being evacuated because of the smoke throughout the building. The cause of the smoke was due to the mother cooking bacon and burnt the pan she was using. Several PPV fans were placed into service while all other companies did a secondary search of the building. All companies went available after venting the smoke from the apartment.

November 11, 2005
Yeadon Fire company was assisting Upper darby fire company at a disaster drill held at the upper darby senior high school, when they were dispatched to a reported working fire in lansdowne borough. Company arrived to find heavy fire on the first floor of the 3 story twin on nyack ave. All companies were placed in service to extinguish the fire.

November 5 House Fire
Around 445 in the afternoon the companies were dispatched to the area of longacre blvd and parkview ave for a dwelling fire. The report was for a house fire with smoke coming from the building. Yeadon Police arrived and reported the same as the caller. Chief Jeffries arrived to find heavy smoke from the exterior and a working house fire. All of the district companies were summoned to assist with the extinguishment of the fire. The house, a 2 1/2 story single was charged with smoke throughout. Crews forced there way into the structure and search for any residents that may have been in the property at that time. The search was negative. They then turned they attention on finding the seat of the fire which was in the basment of the dwelling. After gaining entry to the basement the condition deteriated rapidly and the crew had to vacate the building throught the basement windows with the help of firefighters on the exterior. The bulk of the fire was in the rear of the basment and it did extend the pipe chases to the attic roof area. Several firefighters were treated at the scene and 3 firefighters were transport to local hospitals for evaulation. All firefighters were released from the hospitals and all are at home resting
The fire is still under investigation by the Yeadon Borough Fire Marshal's office and the State Police Fire Marshal

October 23- Early Morning Dryer Fire

Just after midnight on Sunday October 23, 2005, Company 16 and others were dispatched to the parkview blvd for a dwelling fire. Upon arrival of 19-9 Chief Young he reported he had light smoke throughout the home with an active dryer fire. The companies arrival and removed the dryer to the outside of the resdience after using a pressurized water extinguisher to extingiush the fire. There was minimum damage to the property and the laudry room where the dryer was located at. The home owner was let back in the property after the company vented the property of smoke. All companies went available around 1230 am. No injuries to the property owners or fire fighters. The fire is under investigation by the fire marshal office

OCTOBER 21- ACCIDENT WITH ENTRAPMENT

Around 10 am on Friday October 21, 2005 Rescue 16 was requested to assist Co 22 Millbourne Fire company on an accident in the 6400 block of Market st. From the radio dispatch it was reported to be a serious accident with people trap inside of a car. Upon arrival of 22-9A Chief Armont Jr he reported that he has truck vs car accident in the area of the EL construction site. Company 16 under the command of Assistant Chief Mike Himes placed the rescue in service cutting the vehicle apart to remove the patients that were trap in the car. The company was in service for about 1hr and 30 minutes.

October 1st - Building with Entrapment

Just before noon time on Saturday October 1, 2005 The 7 district companies recieved a dispatch that had everyone on edge. A dwelling fire with possible entrapment in the 800 blk of Darnell Ave. Deputy Fire Marshal Rufus Stokes and Police Officer Terry Everett and other Yeadon Police Officers arrived together to find a two story twin with heavy smoke coming from the second floor rear bedroom. The 911 center was advising that there was a subject still on the phone trapped in the house. After checking the exterior of the property the subject was found on the first floor porch roof. The fire was located in the kitchen of the home which was producing thick black smoke throughout the home. No other persons were at home. The first in crews made a very aggressive attack on the fire. Several hand lines were in service to contain and extinguish the fire. The subject was a minor and was transported to Mercy Fitzgerald Hospital to be checked out. The fire is being investigated by the Fire Marshals office. The following fire companies were on location: Yeadon, East Lansdowne, Lansdowne, Fitz Ems & Clifton Height for the RIT, Millbourne Fire company was dispatch to the cover assignment for Yeadon.

September 12th - Motor Vehicle Accident

Just after 6 am, Company 16 was dispatched to the area of Mcdade Ave and Bell for a motor vehicle accident, Police and Chief Jeffries (16-9) arrived to find a single vehicle sitting in the roadway near the entrance to the Holy Cross Cemetary. The drive apparantly lost control of her car, left the road way striking a telephone pole. Then traveling down the sidewalk a few feet riding down the wall and then back into the roadway where the car came to rest. The ambulance crew and medics transported the driver to the hospital with minor injuries. The rescue crew took care of the vehicle by cutting the battery cables and putting down oil dry on the spilled fluids. PECO was requested due to the severety of the pole and again we had to wait until they arrived 1hr and 45 minutes later. The fire company went avialable around 7:45 am.

September 11th - Never Forget

The guys and girls of station 16 are all doing our own thing to remember this horrible day 4 years ago. But each and everyone of us have not forgotten! GONE BUT NOT FORGOTTEN!!!!!

September 10th - Collingdale Safety Day

Rescue 16 with Lt Kunkle (16-13), Lt McCarty (16-13A), Kim McCarty, and Lucky McCarty spent the day participating in the annual Collingdale Safety Day. Thank you to Collingdale for a great day and we look forward to seeing you next year.

September 10th - Water Filled Basement

Company 16 was dispatched to the 600 Block of Yeadon Ave for a service call around 3pm. A/C Melazzo (16-9A) arrived to find about 4 feet of water in the basement and very extensive damage to the upper floors of the home. The homeowner stated they hadn't been in the house for at least a week, and it appeared the water may have been leaking from the second floor. A/C Melazzo requested the response of Yeadon Car 1. F/M Matt Black (YC1) and Deputy Fire Marshal/Code Officer Stokes (YC1A) arrived and assessed the situation. Also making the response was the Borough Emergency Management Director. A/C Melazzo had Company 22 dispatched for their specialized basement pumping equipment. The borough officials deemed the water safe to dispose of in the public sewer and the crews got to work. 4 feet of water was discarded in about 90 minutes. The borough officials deemed the home uninhabitable and placed some placards stating such. Overall the crews were on scene for just under 3 hours. Great Job to everyone on scene.

September 8th - Lew Epright Jr Retires the Radio Room and Kelly Epright gets cleared

The officers and members would like to congratulate Lew Epright Jr on his new job with Dupont. Today was his last day at the radio room and we will miss hearing him on the radio. Kelly Epright also got some good news of her own today, she was cleared to ride solo as a Delco Medic. We are all proud of both of you!!! Keep up the great work

September 2nd to 5th - Hurricane Katrina Relief Fund

The Yeadon Fire Company #1 in conjuction with Yeadon Fire Company Auxiliary, Darby Fire Company #1, and East Lansdowne Fire Company had a fill the boot campaign to benefit the victims of Hurricane Katrina. As of now (September 7th) the crews have raised over $22,000 towards the effort. We all would like to thank the community for your support in our effort. We could not have done it without everyone that was involved!! THANK YOU!!!!!!

September 8th - Gas Main Break

Company 16 was dispatched to 436 S. Lansdowne Ave for a gas leak outside. Engine 16-1 under the command of A/C Melazzo (16-9A) was advised by fireboard that Lt Foltz (24-13A) was on location advising that it was a 2 inch gas pipe that was broken by a back hoe. FB also advised that when made aware of this, they contacted PECO for the emergency response (great job John!!). Upon arrival crews found that indeed there was what looked like a 2 inch high pressure pipe leaking gas. Crews evacuated the immediate area and set up the incident command system, along with dispatching the building response. Lansdowne Ave Command was A/C Melazzo, Safety Officer was C/E DiIenno (16-14), Operations was Lt McCarty (16-13A), and EMS Command was EMT Alosi (105). Fireboard advised of the weather conditions and crews continued to monitor gas levels in surrounding building until the arrival of PECO. PECO arrived very quickly and shut capped the leak. Crews made sure there was still no gas in the buildings and cleared the call. Crews were in service for about 45 minutes.

September 6th - Second Alarm Reponse to Darby

Company 16 was dispatched on the second alarm to 36 and 38 Summit Street for the working building fire. Chief Nauss (04-9) had two row homes with heavy fire in the rear of the building. Medic 04 under the command of Lt Booth (04-13A) had arrived to find two homes well involved with fire in the rear, when the company was originally dispatched for the trash fire. The trash spread to a car which then spread to the two homes. Crews from 16 (Ladder 16, Engine 16-1, and 16-7A) assisted in various tasks that were asked of by 04-9A who had command in the front of the building. 16-7A had a transport to Mercy Fitz while on the fireground (non firefighter related).

September 3rd - Parkview Building Response

Companies 16, 04, 21, and 24 were dispatched to Parkview Court Apartments for the building fire. First responding crews were advised that the PD were on-scene with an apartment fire and that all residents were accounted for. Ladder 16 crew under the command of A/C Melazzo (16-9A) arrived to find medium to heavy smoke in the apartment. Crews set up the PPV fan to vent the smoke out of the apartment. Crews removed bedding material which appeared to be where the fire started. Command requested the response of the Fire Marshall's Office. Yeadon Car 1A responded and is investigating the fire. Companies were in service for about an hour.

September 2nd - Busy Day

The day started out with an MVA across the street from the station. Initially reported by Chief Jeffries (16-9), there was a two vehicle accident with no injuries. About 20 minutes later the occupants of one of the vehicles complained of injuries and Company / Ambulance 16 were dispatched. Ambulance company 16 (16-7 and 16-7A) transported two patients to Mercy Fitz. While still at the hospital, Ambulance Company 16 was advised that the company was going to Church and Myra for an accident. Rescue 16 under the command of Asst. Chief Melazzo (16-9A) arrived to find a one vehicle accident, which was rear ended by a hit and run vehicle, and then drove into a 3 foot wall. Ambulance company 16 transported two patients to Mercy Fitz. Rescue crew dropped some oil dry and stood by while the car was hooked to the tow truck.

While cleaning up the ambulances, crews were advised that the company was going to the 800 Block of Whitby for a gas leak outside. 16-7A responded back to the station to staff the engine. Engine 16-1 under the command of C/E DiIenno (16-14) arrived in the 800 Block to find a gas leak from previous PECO work. FB advised that PECO gave the standard within the hour response. Crews roped off the street and awaited the arrival of PECO, who finally arrived about 90 minutes later. Crews were advised that PECO was aware of the situation and that there is no concern, due to drilling holes to vent built up gas. Crews went available and headed back to help with the Hurricane Katrina Relief Fund. About 4 hours later, crews were again dispatched to the 800 Block of Whitby for the gas leak out. Engine 16-1 under the command of Lt McCarty (16-13A) arrived to find the same problem as earlier. FB was advised to contact PECO and have a supervisor respond to deal with the problem. Yeadon Police blocked the road and awaited the supervisor. About 30 minutes later, PECO had a whole response team on scene digging up the area. Lesson learned: PECO supervisor response will get some action!

August 31st - Truck and EMS to Darby Boro Working Fire

The Truck and Ambulance assisted Company 04 on a building fire. PD arrived to find heavy smoke showing from a Single Family Dwelling. Darby #1 Chief Tom Nauss (04-9) added Ladder 16 and RIT 19 to assignment, which already included 04, 21, 10, and 42. 16-7A was later added by EMS Command due to a BLS transport of a injured firefighter, leaving no BLS transport trucks on the scene. Crews had heavy smoke throughout the 2nd and 3rd floor. Interior crews under the command of Darby #1 Assistant Chief Jason O'Neill (04-9A) and Darby #1 Captain Chris Caruso (04-12) found that the fire was between two of three walls on the outside of the house. Crews were on scene for about 2 hours.

August 30th - Building Fire

At around dinner time Yeadon Fire Company was dispatched to 1000 Block of Serrill ave for a building fire. Crews arrived on scene and were advised by the PD that there may be a problem with the water heater. The homeowner stated that it was extremely hot in the house when he came home. He had not been home for the previous two weeks. The crew went to the basment and found a path of water that was from the water heater and turned it off. The then noticed white spots on the basement cieling. They then notified fireboard to contact the code department to respond. Yeadon Car 1A arrived and investigated the problem in the basement and it appears to be mold growing from the malfuncationing water heater.

August 27th - Accident with Entrapment and 2nd Alarm Response to Darby

At around 1715 hrs the fire company was dispatched to the 1400 block of longacre blvd for a vehicle accident with a vehicle overturned. The police arrived and confirmed the dispatched and also advised that there was also a person trapped inside the vehicle. The ambulance with the asisstance of Fitzgerald Mercy medics started pt care while the fire company crews started rescue operations. Rescue operations were under the command of Assistant Chief Mike Himes (16-9A) while Chief Craig Jeffries (16-9) was the Incident Commander. The crew stabilized the vehicle and extricated the person in about 25 minutes and the pt was then transported to the University of Pennsylvania Hospital Emergency Room.
The company was in service for about 1hr and 30 minutes

Later on in the evening of the 27, Company 16 was requested by Darby Fire Company to assist them on a dwelling fire at 1010 school street. Police went on location with heavy fire on 2nd floor of the structure. Company 16 assisted with ventilation and overhaul of the structure. The residences of the property was helped out of the burning structure by her son and a neighbor on the block. Companies went available without any incident.
The company was under the command of Chief Jeffries.

August 24th - Brush Fire

Company 16 and 24 was dispatched to Parkview Court Apartments 2200 Alfred drive for a brush fire. TAC 16 on location under the command of Assistant Chief Mike Himes, They found a small brush fire in the rear of the 2200 alfred drive on the other side of the fence on the CSX tracks. Tac 16 place the booster line in service with the foam activated to extuinguished the brush fire. Held the respond to TAC 16. On scene for about 30 mins. Later in the day. Company 16 and 24 was dispatched for a gas leak at 743 Revere Rd at the request of PECO who was already on location. The leak was caused by the maintenance department who replaced the stove earlier in the day and did not check for leaks before leaving. Company went avaialbe within 20 minutes.
